How to fix the dreaded Blue Screen of Death on Windows 7?
My computer recently died on me. Whenever I start it up it goes to the windows 7 loading screen then says that windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. Either launch startup repair or start windows normally. None of the startup repair tools can find the cause of the error (except that there is a problem and startuprepair is offline), and starting windows normally shows a screen that says this:

A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer. Etc etc

I tried using the original installation disc, but it says the checksum value is possibly corrupted and won’t load. I made 3 brand new cd’s, one copy of the original and two that are different installations of windows 7 (all said the same thing). I can’t access my system restore saves and windows memory diagnostic doesn’t bring up anything either. I do have the option of command prompt, but I’m inexperienced and don’t know how that could fix things. I’m running the windows 7 beta on a HP pavilion dv6226us laptop. I don’t care if I have to wipe my entire hard drive (I’d rather not, but if it’s the only option I’d be glad to) but someone please help me repair my computer.

It sounds like you have a stick of bad ram. Download a program called MemTest86. It comes in an ISO, all you do is burn it, then boot it. If it reports errors, your memory is bad. Try pulling one stick out if you have two of them and run it again. If it reports errors again switch sticks. Most likely only one is bad, if both are reporting errors it may be something else or both could just be bad. You’ll only know 100% if you get a known good stick and try it out.
